Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for assisting with large diameter auger drilling
   • Access, interpret and apply assist large diameter auger drilling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Load, unload, move, handle, use and store large diameter auger equipment and all associated tools and connecting equipment
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Assist with augering process
   • Fit and remove bits and cutting teeth to and from the cutting head
   • Insert/remove augers and extension pipe to and from the drill string and assist with auger to auger connections
   • Regularly maintain cleanliness around the hole collar by removing spoil only when rotation is stopped
   • Observe housekeeping and site safety measures while conducting auger assistance
3. Mix drilling fluids
   • Check, read and interpret safety information/hazard codes
   • Apply correct mixing procedure for the drilling fluid
   • Carry out storage of drilling mud components and additives
4. Clean equipment
   • Use high pressure cleaners and/or steam cleaning equipment and clean augers and equipment
   • Avoid or confine the spread of contamination from auger and equipment cleaning processes
   • Follow safe work practices for use of cleaning equipment, chemicals and materials
   • Remove and dispose of or neutralise excess spoil from site operations in accordance with environmental regulations
5. Carry out basic maintenance of tools and equipment
   • Carry out shutdown and secure equipment
   • Perform inspection and checks on serviceability of augers including condition of flights, threads, socket connectors and D clips
   • Inspect serviceability of pressure cleaning equipment
   • Maintain all auger equipment in serviceable condition
   • Observe occupational health and safety procedures in carrying out equipment maintenance

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient assisting with large diameter auger drilling including:

applying basic maintenance and servicing of auxiliary equipment

identifying thread types in use on site

identifying bits in use and how to measure them

applying safe storage of tools

using load handling equipment on site

refuelling vehicles, drill rigs and ancillary equipment

conducting housekeeping

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the large diameter auger drilling that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of assisting large diameter auger drilling that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

fitting and removing bits and cutting teeth to and from the cutting head

inserting and removing augers and extension pipe to and from the drill string and assist with auger to auger connections

correctly mixing the drilling fluid

carrying out storage of drilling mud components and additives

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when assisting large diameter auger drilling:

application of the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

work health and safety

environment issues

test bore and well abandonment

basic soil description methods

calculation of volume in cylinders, tanks
